Internship Role and Responsibilities

The University Musical Society (UMS) seeks a summer intern interested in exploring arts integration strategies and performing arts education targeted to K-12 teaching and learning. The intern will assist in research and development of five to seven Learning Guides for the K-12 education community in connection with our School Day Performance series (21/22 season). UMS Learning Guides help teachers extend the impact of our School Day Performances beyond the walls of the theater into the classroom. By providing educator-specific information about the performance, artist, genre, as well as resources and lesson plans, UMS strives to make meaningful connections between the performance and K-12 curriculum. The content and design of the guides are informed by the State of Michigan Education Standards and Arts Standards.

About the Organization

UMS was selected as one of the 2014 recipients of the National Medal of Arts, the nation’s highest public artistic honor, awarded annually by the President of the United States at the White House to those who have “demonstrated a lifetime of creative excellence,” according to the National Endowment for the Arts, which oversees the selection process.

Housed on the campus of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, UMS is one of the oldest performing arts presenters in the country, committed to connecting audiences with performing artists from around the world in uncommon and engaging experiences.

With a program steeped in music, dance, and theater, UMS contributes to a vibrant cultural community by presenting approximately 60 to 75 performances and over 100 free educational activities each season. UMS also commissions new work, sponsors artist residencies, and organizes collaborative projects with local, national, and international partners.

Our mission is to inspire individuals and enrich communities by connecting audiences and artists in uncommon and engaging experiences.
