Description of Internship Project and Intern’s Role and Responsibilities

In the past five years, Community Action Network (CAN) has expanded from four communities to seven, six of which offer educational programs for youth in Kindergarten through 12th grade. The organization is now large enough to generate its own custom curricula featuring a myriad of subjects such as art and design, social-emotional learning, health and wellness, core subjects, and more, which are implemented during CAN’s After School Program and Summer Camps. Staff leading curricula are typically undergraduate students, paid through work-study programs, and are often teaching for the very first time.


CAN is seeking individuals with a background in the arts, humanities, education, social work, or related disciplines to work with CAN directors and staff to build upon existing training modules to include topics related to engaged learning, restorative practice, and more to better prepare and support inexperienced staff in leading curricula to youth. CAN recognizes these early teaching experiences can lead to career-defining moments, and is eager to facilitate a fruitful experience for staff. Interns will collaborate with CAN directors and staff, and report to Laura Amtower, Director of Education. Interns will participate in weekly collaborative meetings, and are additionally invited to participate in weekly supervision sessions with University of Michigan Master of Social Work students to hold topical discussions in relation to work at CAN, studies, and current events. Interns will also visit CAN’s centers to get to know the youth and communities in which we serve, and to experience first-hand how programs operate.

Part time internship

CAN partners with children, youth, and families from under-resourced Washtenaw County neighborhoods to create better futures for themselves and improve the communities in which they live. CAN envisions the closing of socio-economic gaps by providing educational and enrichment programs for children and teens, supportive services for families who are under-resourced, and challenging systems rooted in racism and inequality.
