A Beloved Campus Landmark, a Rare Opportunity—Place Your Name in the Rackham Building

In 1876, the University of Michigan conferred the nation’s first Ph.D.s from a public university. As we celebrate the 150th anniversary of doctoral education at Michigan, Rackham invites you to join in commemorating this transformative journey of discovery and impact—and help propel the next century of graduate research at Michigan.

To mark this extraordinary milestone, we are proud to announce the creation of a permanent donor recognition installation in the Rackham Building, to be featured in the building’s iconic lobby.

When you make a new gift or commitment of $50,000 or more to Rackham by December 31, 2027, you will ensure that your name is permanently recognized.

Join us in shaping the future—and help advance research, support our talented graduate students, and affirm Michigan’s place at the forefront of global inquiry.

Listings Guidance

We are excited to receive your donor recognition installation listing information. To provide maximum transparency, we want to note some content limitations determined by Rackham accessibility standards, design, and space limitations. Prior to production, donors will receive a detailed email regarding the specifics of these limitations, determined in part by our final design.

Preliminary guidance for listings includes:

  • Character and space limits. (Specifics will be determined at a later date.)
  • Individual and family names are permitted, as well as the name of a donor group or organization (example: Barbour Alumni, Students of Color of Rackham Members, The Kennedy Research Group, etc.).
  • We can accommodate “In Memory Of” or “In Honor Of,” provided the full inscription fits within the designed space.
  • Unfortunately, we are not able to accommodate logos, icons, illustrations, slogans, taglines, or additional text outside of what is defined above.
  • Due to space limitations, we also need to exclude degrees earned and graduation years.
  • Rackham Graduate School reserves the sole right to final approval of all aspects of donor plaques, including wording, style, and placement.
  • Once the donor recognition installation is installed, it will not be amended for any reason including but not limited to change in gift size, change of name, or change of personal relationships.
