On October 7, 2025, Rackham alum, bestselling author, and award-winning journalist John U. Bacon (B.A. 1986, M.A. ’94), celebrated the release of The Gales of November: The Untold Story of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

Marking the 50th anniversary of the Edmund Fitzgerald’s sinking in Lake Superior, the book explores explores the vital role Great Lakes shipping played in America’s economic boom, the uncommon lives the 29 sailors who lost their lives in the disaster led, the sinking’s most likely causes, and the heartbreaking aftermath for those left behind. Creating a definitive account of the disaster, Bacon draws on more than 100 interviews with the families, friends, and former crewmates of those lost.

This fall, Bacon was a guest on Listen In, Michigan, a podcast brought to you by the online alumni magazine, Michigan Today. In the episode, the author shares little-known details and mind-boggling facts about the fury of fresh water lakes, the nature of flexible ships, and the downright terror that came for these seasoned sailors that fateful night.
