Janaki Ammal Edvaleth Kakkat

Janaki Ammal Edvaleth Kakkat (1926) was the first woman in the U.S. to earn a Ph.D. in Botany. After completing her degree, she returned to India to take a faculty position at Maharaja’s College of Science in 1931, and in 1951 she was asked by Jawaharal Nehru to reorganize the Botany Survey of India.
