Concurrent Undergraduate/Graduate Study (CUGS) – LS&A Only

Introduction

Early admission to a graduate program serves a useful purpose for the exceptional student who virtually completes an undergraduate program in three or three and one-half years with an outstanding record and who, in the judgement of both graduate and undergraduate faculty is ready to enter a graduate program. Evaluation of the quality of students granted early admission must, of course, be based upon several admission criteria including breadth of program, course grades, commitment to the field, degree of motivation, academic ability, and other factors regularly considered by a graduate admissions committee. The decision of both faculties will provide the student an opportunity to accelerate progress and to gain more intensive knowledge of a discipline at a pace uniquely appropriate to the individual. CUGS students enrolled in both the undergraduate and graduate school will pay the higher tuition rate for all credits elected. A maximum of fifteen graduate credit hours earned in courses elected in this early admissions program “Concurrent Undergraduate/Graduate Study (CUGS)” could count toward both the bachelor and the graduate degrees.

The student, in consultation with undergraduate and graduate advisors, develops a program that meets both the requirements for the master’s degree and those for the award of the bachelor’s degree. This program must be recorded on the CUGS Election Form in an attempt to avoid any difficulties before the student enrolls in the CUGS program. It is expected that the A.B. (B.S.) will be awarded within one calendar year after initial enrollment.

Applicants submit the Rackham application, the application fee, and required credentials. International applicants are also required to submit financial resource information. The minimum G.P.A. must be at least 3.7 and may be higher in some programs. Students earning dual bachelors degrees are NOT eligible for CUGS.

At the time of admission, the department must submit the completed CUGS Election Form to Rackham Academic
Records and Dissertations (OARD). A new form must be submitted if any changes in elections are made.

Admissions Procedures

The applicant must submit a written request for entering CUGS to the Dean of LSA Undergraduate College. If the applicant’s request is granted, a letter expressing this approval must be provided to the student and must be included in the application materials submitted to Rackham. The student must submit the application, application fee, and letter of approval from the Dean of LSA to Rackham

Enrollment and Double Counting of Information

CUGS students enroll in Rackham only for graduate courses that are double counted with the undergraduate and graduate degrees. The undergraduate degree program transfers the double counted hours back to the undergraduate record. Students must not dual enroll.

The maximum number of graduate level credit hours that can be double counted in any CUGS program is 15 hours, but must not exceed half the minimum required hours for the degree. Students must be registered a minimum of half the master’s program in Rackham only with no other U-M registration.

CUGS students enrolled in both the undergraduate and graduate school will pay the higher tuition rate for all credits elected.
