General Safety Tips

Graduate Student Safety and Support

Graduate students often face challenges quite specific to their role on campus. All graduate students are invited to participate in a free 90 minute Personal Safety Workshop (PSE) to learn emergency physical techniques and practice professional and social safety skills.

Register for U-M Emergency Alerts

U-M Emergency Alert is a free, mass notification system by which the University can notify students, faculty, and staff of an active, major campus emergency.

Register Your Laptop

Laptops, personal electronics, and bicycles are easy targets for theft. In addition to the cost of replacement, they may have personal information and intellectual property that can be difficult or impossible to recover and protect. The U-M Division of Public Safety and Security is offering a free Laptop, Personal Electronics, and Bicycle Registration Program to members of the campus community to deter theft and avoid the consequences or assist in the recovery of stolen property.

Active Attacker Safety Tips

Chances are you’ll never face an active attacker situation. However if you do, you need to be prepared. An active attacker situation can cause panic and disbelief. Knowing what to do in advance increases your chances of surviving. Your reaction matters.

U-M Safety Resources

There are many resources provided by the University of Michigan to help you think about your personal safety, talk about safety with your friends, and share responsibility for keeping our campus community a safe place.

Identity and Information Safety

Don’t be the victim of identity theft; protect your information with these tips from the U-M Division of Public Safety and Security and U-M Information and Technology Services.

Sexual Assault Prevention and Awareness Center (SAPAC)

SAPAC provides educational and supportive services for the U-M community related to sexual assault, intimate partner violence, sexual harassment, and stalking. In addition to the many resources available on the website and at the office, the 24-Hour Crisis Line is staffed by trained counselors.

Renter’s Insurance

Renters insurance has the same purpose as homeowner’s insurance; to reimburse you for losses if your personal property is lost, stolen, or damaged.

Severe Weather Preparedness

Michigan weather can change at any moment. Be prepared in the event of a tornado or severe thunderstorm with these safety tips from the U-M Office of Emergency Preparedness.

Fire Safety

The Ann Arbor Fire Department (AAFD) provides emergency services including fire suppression, vehicle extrication, medical response, hazardous materials response, water/ice rescue, and technical rescue 24 hours per day.

Safety Outdoors

Late Night Transportation

If you need transportation to your car, home, another location on campus, or elsewhere in Ann Arbor after buses have stopped running, there are multiple options–and many of them are free for U-M students.

Blue Light Emergency Phones

Wherever you are, if you see something suspicious or if you see someone in trouble, call 9-1-1 to reach the U-M Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS). The University has Blue Light Emergency Phones located throughout campus. These phone can be identified by a free standing pedestal and blue light mounted on top. When the telephone receiver is removed from the cradle or the button is pushed, the DPSS Communications Center is automatically alerted and an officer is sent to the location of the telephone. No dialing or conversation is required. If possible, however, try to describe the emergency to the Communications specialist.

Bike Safety

For many members of the University community, bicycling is the preferred mode of travel around campus. Do your part to stay safe when biking by being aware of this information.

Parking and Vehicle Safety

If you have a car on campus, consider these tips from the U-M Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS) to keep yourself and your vehicle safe.
