We all need to feel well to do well. There are dozens of campus and community resources devoted to keeping you healthy as well as resources to help you when you are not feeling your best. To address your needs, Rackham provides information to faculty, staff, and students to help you navigate the resources available to support you in graduate school. Medical Care Facilities

On Campus

University Health Service (UHS)

UHS is a health care facility located on central campus (207 Fletcher Street) that offers many outpatient services in one building for U-M students, faculty, and staff. Many of the services provided to currently enrolled students by UHS are covered by the Health Service fee. Spouses, significant others, and dependents 10 years of age and older may also use the Health Service on a fee-for-service basis.

Women’s Health Clinic (UHS)

Offers routine women’s health exams, contraception, and diagnosis and treatment for women’s health concerns, including menstrual irregularities or problems, pain with intercourse, and much more.

Nurse Advice by Phone

Not sure what to do? A nurse is available to provide advice by phone 24 hours a day to currently enrolled U-M students and other UHS patients at no cost. Calling can save you time and may help you avoid a trip to UHS, the ER, or an urgent care facility. Call 734.764.8320 day or night.

University of Michigan Health System (UMHS)

The University of Michigan Health System, located at 1500 E. Medical Center Dr., offers inpatient and outpatient care, in addition to vast research and teaching facilities. The eight-unit complex includes University Hospital, Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital, and C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital. More than 110 specialty services, ranging from Emergency Services and Obstetrics-Gynecology to Pediatrics and Psychiatry, are available. The costs of care at the University of Michigan Health System, however, are not covered by student fees. Check with your health insurance for questions about copays and coverage.

University of Michigan Health System Women’s Health Program

Provides comprehensive services, outreach activities, and a full-service Women’s Health Resource Center for women.

Off Campus

Packard Health

The Packard Health offers complete medical care by appointment on a sliding scale at three locations: Packard Health (3174 Packard Rd.) and Packard Health West (1915 Pauline Blvd.), and Packard Health Ypsilanti (200 Arnet St., Ypsilanti). The clinic serves all members of the community.

St. Joseph Mercy Hospital

St. Joseph Mercy Hospital provides comprehensive, coordinated health care services through its network of community facilities. The hospital’s main site is located on East Huron River Drive between Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti (5301 McAuley Drive). It offers complete medical and surgical services, including cardiac care, cancer care, neurosurgery, rehabilitation therapy, and the Family Birth Center. The hospital also offers Urgent Care, Pediatric Urgent Care, and 24-hour emergency health care services.

St. Joseph Mercy Pediatric Emergency Service

Provides medical care for children when their doctor is not available – especially in the evening, on weekends, and on holidays. Use the emergency entrance at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital.

University of Michigan Health System (UMHS) Children’s Emergency Services

Treats medical emergencies and minor illnesses or injuries for children 17 and under. Parents or guardians bringing a child to the Mott Children’s Hospital emergency department should use the pediatric emergency department entrance located on E. Medical Center Drive just past the main entrance to University Hospital and Parking Garages P2 and P3. Valet parking is provided from this entrance as a service to our patients and their families. Dental Health

University of Michigan School of Dentistry

The School of Dentistry offers a wide variety of dental services to the public and University community. Service is provided by supervised student providers or specialty residents.

The Dental Faculty Associates is a private practice setting within the School of Dentistry where patients are treated exclusively by faculty dentists. The Dental Faculty Associates offer a full range of dental services.

Mental Health

Service Providers

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS)

CAPS has a professional staff which includes social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, and religious psychological counselors, and peer counselors. Free, confidential counseling is available to currently enrolled students on an individual basis for a wide range of personal and interpersonal concerns as well as for problem solving and referral to other campus organizations. CAPS also provides a variety of group experiences, including ongoing group counseling and workshops on a plethora of topics and common concerns. Additionally, Rackham has an embedded CAPS counselor, Dr. Laura Monschau, who is available to meet with Rackham students.

Mental Health Services at University Health Service (UHS)

UHS provides medication management of common mental health issues; a Care Manager for screenings, referral and follow-up, or just to talk; Wellness Coaching to discuss how mental health and well-being impact success at U-M; and the Collegiate Recovery Program for students in recovery from alcohol or other drug addiction, or those interested in learning about recovery.

Faculty and Staff Counseling and Consultation Office (FASCCO)

FASCCO is a U-M program that offers a number of services designed to help staff, faculty, and their immediate family members with personal difficulties encountered at both work and home. A student who is also a University employee (i.e., a GSI/GSSA/GSRA) is eligible for assistance from FASCCO. Services provided by FASCCO, all of which are free of charge and confidential, include:

  • Short-term counseling services to all staff, faculty, and their immediate family members on personal, emotional, family, and work place issues
  • Personalized coaching services to assist with achieving professional or personal goals such as overcoming procrastination, improving work organization, and completion of specific projects
  • Critical incident, trauma, and grief counseling

U-M Psychological Clinic

The Psych Clinic offers therapy for adults for a variety of difficulties and concerns, including depression and anxiety, problems with procrastination, and problems with personal relationships.

Outpatient Clinic – Department of Psychiatry

The clinic provides a wide range of outpatient psychiatric services, including cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), interpersonal therapy (IPT), group psychotherapy, and long- and short-term psychodynamic psychotherapy. Clinical services are provided by psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, clinical nurse specialists, and social workers.

Psychiatric Emergency Services at University Hospital

Psychiatric Emergency Services (PES) provides emergency/urgent walk-in evaluation and crisis phone services available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for people of all ages. Crisis Phone Service: 734.936.5900 (24 hours/7 days).

University of Michigan Depression Center

U-M’s Comprehensive Depression Center (UMDC) is the first of its kind devoted entirely to bringing depression into the mainstream of medical research, translational care, education, and public policy. The Center develops, disseminates, and advances state-of-the-art science, education, treatment, and prevention strategies for clinical depression.

University Center for the Child and Family (UCCF)

UCCF offers a wide variety of psychological services to children, adolescents, families, and couples, including individual counseling for children, parental guidance for parents of troubled adolescents, family therapy, couples therapy, and other group programs that advance understanding of child development and family relationships.

The Women’s Center of Southeastern Michigan

This nonprofit women’s resource center provides affordable counseling, financial, legal, and job-related services for both women and men.

MiTalk

MiTalk, an interactive website for U-M students, offers mental health resources like online mental health screenings for depression and anxiety, skill-building tools to help you manage stress and academic life, multimedia workshops, lectures, and relaxation exercises to play or download.

Sexual Health

This University Health Service (UHS) website provides information and resources to support your sexual health. Topics include healthy relationships, communication, contraception, sexually transmitted diseases, and pregnancy.

UHS Services

Planned Parenthood

Offers abortion services, birth control services, emergency contraception, HIV testing, LGBT services, men’s health services, patient education, pregnancy testing, options, and services, STD testing and treatment, and women’s health services. There are two locations: the Ann Arbor Health Center and the Ann Arbor-West Health Center.

HIV/AIDS

HIV/AIDS Treatment Program at the U-M Hospital

Provides complete care for the whole person using a multi-focused team approach.

HIV Testing at Spectrum Center

Offers free and anonymous HIV testing. The Spectrum Center website also lists other places to get tested on campus and in the community.

Eating Disorders and Body Image

UHS Services and Resources

Body-Peace Corps

The Body-Peace Corps is a U-M student organization whose members are passionate about promoting positive body image and preventing eating disorders. The organization offers a variety of workshops, resources, and activism opportunities.

U-M Comprehensive Eating Disorders Program

This program at U-M Mott Children’s Hospital provides individualized, compassionate, evidence-based care for patients age 8-24 with eating disorders.

Center for Eating Disorders

This private clinic in Ann Arbor offers outpatient treatment, education, support, and referral services to children, adolescents, and adults with eating, weight, and body image disorders including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, compulsive eating/binge eating disorder, and related issues.

Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence

Sexual Assault Prevention and Awareness Center (SAPAC)

SAPAC promotes healthy relationships, teaches non-violence and equality, supports survivor healing, and fosters a respectful and safe environment for all members of the U-M community. SAPAC provides educational and supportive services related to sexual assault, intimate partner violence, sexual harassment, and stalking.

Abuse Hurts Initiative

The U-M Abuse Hurts Initiative is a cross-campus collaboration promoting prevention of and effective response to domestic or intimate partner and sexual violence affecting members of the University community. SafeHouse Center

SafeHouse is a local shelter for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. Programs include counseling, court accompaniment, information and referrals, emergency shelter, and personal advocacy. The Crisis Line is staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Language interpretation for non-English speakers is available at all times.

Alternatives to Domestic Aggression (ADA)

ADA is a program that specializes in working with men to stop their use of abuse or battering. The purpose of ADA is to end domestic violence and abuse in our community. Though the program is located within Catholic Social Services of Washtenaw County, services are offered on a non-denominational basis so people of all–or no–religious affiliations are welcome.

Sleep

University of Michigan Sleep Disorder Center

The U-M Sleep Disorders Center has three locations in order to diagnose and treat patients who have problems with their sleep or their level of alertness.

Substance Abuse, Addiction, and Recovery

University Health Service (UHS) BASICS

UHS offers Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students (BASICS), a two-session alcohol assessment and education program offered free to all U-M students who want to explore their alcohol use. Appointments can be made on the website.

MHealthy Alcohol Management

This brief, confidential educational program helps address drinking problems by reducing drinking or stopping altogether. It also offers an online self-evaluation to help individuals identify problems.

U-M Collegiate Recovery Program

The Collegiate Recovery Program provides case management, with weekly check-in, for transitions into campus, recovery resources, and support for success on campus. The website also provides links to area 12-step meetings, treatment centers, and other community resources.

University of Michigan Addiction Center

The Addiction Center offers clinical assessment, diagnosis, and treatment personalized for individuals and their families.

Tobacco: You Can Quit!

This UHS website provides information and links to resources and groups. U-M is a smoke-free campus, and students, faculty, and staff can get support for quitting. Learn more at the Smoke-Free University Initiative website.

Individual Marijuana Education Program (IMEP)

This two-session marijuana assessment and education program at UHS is designed to assist students in examining their own behavior in a judgment-free environment. The program is free for all U-M students.
