Do you know how health care works on campus?
University Health Service (UHS) is your campus health clinic, providing comprehensive services in one building on central campus, very near Rackham Graduate School.
When you are a currently enrolled U-M student (Ann Arbor campus), most UHS services are free because they are covered by your health service fee, which is already paid as part of your tuition. If you have GradCare, you should know that UHS is a GradCare Primary Care Site.
For routine health care, you should schedule an appointment. Routine health care includes physical exam; testing for STIs, TB, etc.; contraception; and prescriptions (new or renewal). If you walk in without an appointment, you will generally be scheduled and asked to return at that time.
For urgent problems, you have options. Urgent problems include fever ≥ 101°F (38.3°C) or lasting 2 or more days; significant or increasing pain, especially with fever; and urinary tract infections. Here’s what to do:
- Weekdays: Call or visit UHS in person. UHS medical staff will evaluate your need and determine whether you can be scheduled or seen same-day.
- Saturdays 9:00 am-noon: Visit in person for evaluation.
- Nights and weekends: You may wish to call for free nurse advice (see below), or go to an urgent care facility or hospital emergency room. Fees for any services outside UHS would be your responsibility.
In a medical emergency, you should call 911 or go to the nearest hospital emergency room, which is U-M Hospital Emergency Room, located at 1500 E. Medical Center Drive in Ann Arbor, several blocks from central campus. Fees for any services outside UHS would be your responsibility.
If you’re not sure about whether to go to the ER or an urgent care facility, you can call for nurse advice.
Not sure what to do? A nurse is available to provide advice by phone 24 hours a day to currently enrolled U-M students and other UHS patients at no cost. Calling can save you time and may help you avoid a trip to UHS, the ER or an urgent care facility. Call 734-764-8320 day or night.
