Dear Rackham Students,

Earlier today, the Board of Regents approved the 2020 general-fund budget. One new aspect of the budget that I want to make sure you are aware of is the adoption of an international-student fee. This fee will be applied to enrolled international students on the Ann Arbor campus starting in the fall term of 2019. I encourage you to visit the university’s Key Issues page regarding the fee—which includes an FAQ—in order to learn more about it. This article from the University Record provides more insight into the budget overall.

Rackham Graduate School, like the university as a whole, has long welcomed international students and deeply values their many contributions to our community. The FAQ describes how implementing this fee will ensure continued and sustained international-student support across the university.

I know that you may still have questions about this new fee. To that end, I will host an open forum for discussion. The forum is scheduled for Tuesday, June 25, from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. in the West Conference Room of the Rackham Building.

Again, I would like to ensure your awareness of this new aspect of the university budget, to reaffirm the commitment of the graduate school to our international students, and to pledge to hear your thoughts and your questions both as part of the open forum and going forward into the new academic year.

Sincerely,

Mike Solomon
Dean
